A "User Interface (UI)" is the point of interaction between the user and a digital device or product—like the touchscreen on your smartphone, or the touchpad you use to select what kind of coffee you want from the coffee machine. A UI designer considers the look, feel, and interactivity of the user interface, typically for websites and apps.
UX design refers to the term “User Experience design”. A UX designer thinks about how the experience makes the user feel, and how easy it is for the user to accomplish their desired tasks. For example: How easy is the checkout process when shopping online? How easy is it for you to grip a vegetable peeler? Does your online banking app make it easy for you to manage your money?
UI course students will learn how to design the visual, interactive elements of a product interface—including buttons, icons, spacing, typography, colour schemes, and responsive design. Students will understand how to make a product consistent, coherent, and aesthetically pleasing.
UX course students will go through the UX design process and learn how to take a design concept from start to finish while going through every stage of the design process. Students will gain an appreciation for the process of developing and improving the quality of interaction, not just for a product but for all facets of a company. UX design is NOT about visuals; it focuses on the overall feel of the experience.
UI/UX designers are involved in designing brand new products, coming up with new features, or making changes to an existing product or service. As such, they play an important and increasingly strategic role in companies. Many tech company CEO's, especially in Silicon Valley, are originally designers.
UI/UX design is a core part of the business for technology product companies like Google, Amazon, Facebook, Apple, etc. UI/UX designers are required in most tech start-ups nowadays not to mention established software services companies like Cognizant, Infosys, TCS, etc. UI/UX design is also becoming more in demand in many other sectors like government institutions and NGO's.
There are many higher education opportunities for UI/UX, especially outside India. Many universities worldwide offer Master's programs in UI/UX design or related fields. Since UI/UX is a relatively newer field, there are less number of applicants for university admissions and students will have more opportunities to continue their studies in reputed universities worldwide.
